Protect Furniture During Extended Home Projects and Repairs

Planning a renovation that is going to drag on for months?

This is the part no one tells you about. The kitchen is finished. The new bathroom is beautiful. And that sofa you’ve had wrapped in plastic in the dining room for six months? Junk.

Furniture is the forgotten casualty of almost every long home project.

It adds up fast. A dining set, a sectional and bedroom suite can easily be worth more than the remodel that damaged them.

The good news?

Securing it all doesn’t have to be difficult or costly. You just need to plan ahead of breaking ground.

What you’ll pick up:

  • Why A Boat Storage Unit Beats A Spare Room
  • How Long These Projects Really Run
  • Where Furniture Damage Actually Comes From
  • Prepping Furniture The Right Way
  • Getting The Unit Size Right

Why A Boat Storage Unit Beats A Spare Room

The typical homeowner stuffs things in the garage, piles things in the back bedroom, and hopes they don’t topple over. That’s fine for a weekend project. Forget it when you are working on something for three months.

A boat storage unit is the smarter move.

They’re long and wide and tall because they’re designed to store a trailer, a boat hull and an outboard motor. They just happen to be giant rectangle boxes that are also perfect for storage tables, wardrobes, sectionals and bed frames. Renting a storage unit this size gives you space to fit all your furniture in one trip, with extra room for boxes, rugs, and oddball pieces that never stack nicely. Plus a boat storage unit will almost always have drive-up access, which means movers roll the truck right up to the door and nothing needs to be carried down a hallway or dragged around a tight stairwell.

Actually that last point is significant than most people realize. The majority of furniture damage occurs while handling not in storage.

These Projects Always Run Longer Than Planned

Remodeling isn’t just something homeowners do. It’s what they do. 54% of homeowners renovated in 2025. And these are not quick projects. On average, kitchens take nearly 5.8 months of construction time after planning is complete.

Then the delays arrive.

26% of projects are delayed by two months or more because of labour shortages. Combine that with the 37% of homeowners who exceed their budget and 31% who increase scope mid-project and your “six week” renovation suddenly becomes a six month renovation.

Here is why that matters for your furniture:

A dust sheet is a temporary fix. Hang one up for six months in a room full of power tools, heavy traffic, and a fine layer of ever-present drywall dust, and it goes from being protective to placing a cover over the issue.

Where The Damage Actually Comes From

Ask anyone who has experienced a long-term project and they will name the same three offenders every time.

Construction Dust

Dust gets everywhere. Drywall, gypsum and plaster dust floats on air currents, slips under closed doors and settle into all surfaces that are soft. Dust gets into upholstery fibres, cushion seams and the pores of unfinished wood.

What’s worse, it doesn’t lie down politely afterwards, either. Walk across the room or turn on the air conditioning and lift goes everywhere again. Homeowners find renovation dust long after the last tradie has left, weeks or even months later.

Constant Reshuffling

Furniture that stays in the house gets moved. Repeatedly.

From the lounge room into the hallway, back into the lounge room, into the spare room when the floor guys arrive. Each and every one of those transitions is an opportunity for a scratched leg, torn corner or broken join. Factor that by four months and it doesn’t add up well.

Moisture And Temperature Swings

Open walls, unfinished windows and uncured plaster all dry towards the sky. Solid wood expands and twists. Veneer raises at the periphery. Leather becomes dry or stains. Fabrics absorb odors they can’t shake loose.

How To Prep Furniture Before It Goes Into Storage

Don’t just load the truck and drive off. Two hours in preparation prevents a mountain of regret later.

Work through this list:

  • Clean everything very well. Dirt and grease left on a surface will harden over time.
  • Condition leather; treat timber. Spray on a light coat before storing to prevent either from drying out.
  • Dismantle anything that will take apart. Table legs, bed frames, shelving units and more will not only fit better, but are easier to transport when they’re in pieces.
  • Bag the hardware. Tape a bag labelled screws and bolts to the bottom of whatever part it came from.
  • Wrap in moving blankets, not plastic. Plastic clings to the surface and retains moisture, encouraging mould.
  • Lift off floor. Keep bottoms off floor. Pallets or timber battens.

Unload with a plan. Load heavy flat items against the back wall. Store mirrors and glass on edge between mattresses. Don’t let anything sit on top of an upholstered surface for months.

Make sure to leave a path down the middle too. You’ll want to have access to something out of there before this project is over. Everyone does.

Getting The Unit Size Right

This is where most people mess up. They always mess up in the same way too. They rent too small.

A rough guide:

  1. One or two rooms — a compact unit will usually cope
  2. Three bedrooms plus a lounge — something in the mid range
  3. A full house, or anything oversized — this is boat storage unit territory

It’s worth spending the money for those few extra square feet. Otherwise you end up stacking furniture five pieces high and hauling out your scratched dining table every September. High ceilings are another big plus. Once things are wrapped up and won’t fall down, vertical is free space.

Make sure the facility has air-conditioning as well. It’s worth every penny if you have solid wood, leather, art or a piano.

Sealing It Up

By their very nature long term home projects are dirty, dusty and chaotic. The furniture that gets moved around during the process rarely emerges unscathed.

To recap the plan:

  • Assume the project runs longer than quoted
  • Get furniture out of the building rather than under a sheet
  • Prep, wrap and disassemble before loading
  • Rent more space than the tape measure suggests
  • Keep anything you might need parked near the door

Do that, and the only thing the renovation changes is the room itself.
